Product Evaluation: Alpinestars Women’s Bat Leather Pants

Alpinestars’ Bat leather pants are perfect for your next autumn road tour or Swedish adventure. Constructed of top-quality leather, the Bat pants are highly abrasion resistant and made me feel safe, even at speed on the interstate. Designed with improved ergonomics for increased comfort and flexibility, articulation panels just above the knees and across the back create a serious, functional-looking fit designed for female proportions. I feel they gave me a certain street cred.

The Bat pants are said to be the perfect companion for A-stars’ Stunt or Indy riding jackets. In fact, the waist zip allows connection with any Alpinestars jacket — or, in theory, any jacket at all, as the manufacturer conveniently provides the opposite half of the zipper that then enables any self respecting Batgirl to sew this half zipper into her own jacket, connecting the two into a windproof and cozy one-piece “batsuit.” This feature, together with the higher waist in the back for sportbike riders, excludes unwanted drafts in cooler weather.

The Alpinestars pants come with CE-approved knee protectors, which are removable to give a sleeker look. There is a handy, zipped front pocket for Batgirl essentials, but it’s awkwardly placed; the pocket’s big enough for any phone and credit card, but it’s at the groin and is uncomfortable for anything more rigid than a $20 bill and a tissue. For the truly athletic (perhaps the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is looking for new leather pants?), there are calf-adjustment zippers and stretch sections at the ankle, and the lower leg is tailored to fit inside your bat boots.

One caveat: beware of Alpinestars’ European sizing scale. I take a size 4 in US jeans, but needed a US 8 (Euro 44) in these pants. And, if you are over 5’6″ tall, I would recommend getting the Tall version.

I found the Bat pants snug and warm; ideal for fall and spring riding, but way too hot, despite some perforated leather sections and ventilation slits, for a summer day in New England, or a recent spring road trip through the Florida Keys. – Georgina Scholl
